Hazardous Waste Regulations Broken – Cancer Spreads

Meigs County, Ohio has a problem. Hazardous waste regulations have been largely ignored by polluting companies nearby, and almost everyone in the town has been affected by cancer.

Resident Elisa Young said in an interview by the Huffington Post, “I’ve lost neighbors to lung cancer who have never smoked,” she said. “I’ve lost them to brain cancer, breast, throat, colon, multiple myeloma, pre-leukemia, arsenic poisoning. When my son, who’s in his 20s, came home to visit, he said, ‘Mom, is it normal for your mouth to taste like metal?’ We pulled over and he coughed until he got sick.”

The coal mines and coal plants nearby have been legally dumping coal ash – which was classed as non hazardous in 1988. It is only now that the Environmental Protection Agency is re-evaluating the actual dangers that coal ash might present.

Hazardous Waste – Birth Defects Developments

A small Californian town has reported a rise in birth defects – allegedly caused by the amount of hazardous waste dumped there.

Defects appearing in children like heart problems and cleft palates have been linked to the dangerously high amounts of arsenic found in the drinking water in Kettleman City, California and the amount of pesticides used on surrounding farms. There is also a massive toxic waste site a mile away from the town.

Council authorities are investigating these cases.

Hazardous Waste is Dumped in Mum’s Garden

A worried mother-of-three has today called on council bosses to take action to remove rubbish bags filled with hazardous waste – presumably human waste – which have been mysteriously dumped outside her house.

About 20 rubbish sacks filled with a yellowish liquid, which appears to be vomit, has been discarded in the front garden of Wendy Smith’s home in Dereham Road, Costessey.

Mrs Smith, a telephone engineer, said she does not know exactly what is in the bags, but is concerned it is some sort of hazardous bodily waste and fears there may even be used needles lurking in the sacks.

The 39-year-old has contacted Norwich City Council about the strange sacks but has been told as her house is a private property she must dispose of the waste herself.

She said: “It’s just so frustrating that it’s my responsibility and no-one will do anything about it for me. I really don’t know what they bags are.”

It goes without saying that dumping hazardous waste in a non-licensed area is highly illegal. Check out the audacity of this wagon driver in Los Angeles:

Hazardous Waste Disposal Report Goes live

Wednesday 19th November saw the release of the Environment Agency’s ‘Waste Information; 2007′ report and the hazardous waste removal blog has the breakdown below.

The report found that in 2007, England and Wales only used 60% of their permitted waste incineration capacity and the amount of waste sent to permitted treatment facilities stalled, after a five year increase.
The amount of waste sent for incineration in 2007 was actually 6% higher than in 2006 level at around 5.2 million tonnes, however the total capacity for incineration was much higher at 8.6 million tonnes.
Municipal waste incinerators made the most of their allowance but even they used just 75% of their capacity; incinerating 3,270,000 out of a possible 4,416, 000 tonnes of waste.
The report revealed that UK Material Recycling Facilities showed an 7% increase in the amount of input compared to 2006. Along side this, there was a rise of more than one million tonnes in the amount of waste sent for composting in the same period.
Landfill space running out
One of the most alarming sections of the report was that regarding Landfill sites and capacity. It revealed that London now has just three years left of landfill capacity at 2007 input rates, compared to as much as 13 years in other parts of the UK.
Despite waste management capacities not being reached, the figures show a consistent improvement in the handling and disposal of hazardous waste which is encouraging for the health of current and future generations; not to mention the planet!
